Most hymns are arranged for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices, which roughly correspond to the respective ranges of the four instruments in a string quartet. And, because they are intended to be sung by ordinary congregants and are therefore made to be easy to sing, they are also generally easy to play. As a result, we can usually play any hymn for which we can get the music. We own a collection of 538 hymns entitled Great Hymns of the Faith, which includes most of the commonly-heard hymns. Also, sheet music for all of the hymns in The Open Hymnal Project are available free of charge. If you’re thinking of a specific title, this is a good place to start.
